I just cannot do art on a schedule, and that's all there is to it. Sorry folks. You can unsubscribe if you want, but I will still post comic art here. It just won't be on a normal schedule, as I'd said it was going to be. If randomness bothers you, feel free to depart. And to those who stick around, I'm glad you remain interested. Thanks.

1:57 pm - Month

lostboydv
Having a crazy busy month. First sickness, now videos and registering for thesis and stuff. We'll get back into the program here on August 30. I know you are all busy too, what with school just starting. Let's all take a deep breath. (*huuuuuph!*) And let it out. (*pa-shoooooo!*)

1:32 pm - Calling in sick

lostboydv
I called in sick to work today, and I'm gonna do the same here. Forgive me, dear readers, but I just don't feel capable of focusing on drawing today. I have laryngitis or bronchitis or strep or something, and I simply can't summon up the muse. The mucus yes, but not the muse. When I'm well, I'll get back on the weekly schedule.

Til then, I'll share with you the comic strip submission that I sent to Antarctic Press about 6 years ago. It's a little story I called Gene Sequence, about a hapless college student named Gene who finds out his grandfather was a mad scientist and ends up accidentally crossing the DNA of his neighbor, a girl named Holly who he practically grew up with, with that of a raccoon, transforming her into a cute girl with furry ears, a tail, and some interesting new wildlife habits. Other characters turn up in the story as well, including the obligatory rival science student, obligatory secondary love interest, and others.

They declined to publish it, but I've been told by several guest artists at conventions that it's publishing-worthy. I only drew 5 pages, because that's what AP requires. But I fleshed out a storyline that would be good for at least 6 issues of comics. Here are those first 5 pages. And should any art moochers happen along, you should be aware that I sent myself a sealed copy of the submission via registered mail many years ago and have it safely stored. That's solid proof for any court should you try to swipe my ideas or characters. Capiche?

Anyway, on with the old comic scans.Collapse )

2:01 pm - Otakon

lostboydv
I plan to continue the story of the D&D game with Miles, Asako, and Yuki gaming together, but not this week. I'm too busy getting ready for Otakon.

4:52 pm - Lettering touch-up

lostboydv
Due to the valuable feedback of several of my friends/readers, I decided to touch up the lettering on this week's comic, replacing the TrueType Comic Sans MS with my own personal handwriting for that "personal touch" and organic feel that fits better with the style of the comic. I completely replaced the old one, so it's not there for comparison. I do think the new one looks better. So my thanks go out to everyone who commented about that!

11:57 am - What to expect

lostboydv
Just so you know, my intention will be to keep a semi-regular schedule of doing one comic per week. But know this: I have a Master's thesis to finish between now and November. There will be times I cannot turn in a strip on schedule. But I will make a dedicated effort to never let this community sit idle for more than 2 weeks consecutively, even during those very busy times. After I have my degree, you can count on more regular reliability in my schedule.

1:57 pm - Goodbye for now, Holly.

lostboydv
This is a crosspost from my personal journal. I have a few folks on here who don't watch my personal journal, though, so I felt the need to share this here as well.

My family's deeply beloved Maltese dog, Holly, died last night.

I saw an image in my mind last night when I was hovering between the Dreaming and the waking world. And I knew when I saw it that I had to draw it today.

I did it entirely from my mind, an artistic feat I've not accomplished with such ease since my comic strip days. This was one of the easiest, most naturally-flowing things I have ever drawn, and I am very pleased with it and with myself, and I think Holly would be glad that she brought my art back out to the surface.

The image is of Death (from the Sandman comic series by Neil Gaiman) cradling Holly in her arms. And both of them are happy. Holly loves everyone without question and who wouldn't love to hold Holly? So both are expressing their contentment. Here's the drawing.

I miss you, Holly. You'll be in my heart.

And the 1994 dated humor continues.Collapse )

These 3 strips were published consecutively in the weekly edition that was published the summer before the semester began, so very few people saw it, which was a shame. It was a cute little arc.

Although THESE three are in order of publication, I'm not posting the entire semester-worth of strips in order of publication, mind you. I'll do a lot of them out of order. There's very little cross-story continuity, if any, so I'm just putting them up in the order I feel like it. :) I'm gonna post a lot of them every day, so I can get started on new comics soon. Expect at least 2 of these old comics per day. Maybe more. Maybe a lot more.

6:22 pm - Back to 1994...

lostboydv
OK, let's get back to some of those old comics, shall we? Here's another one from my first season of Miles, when I wasn't afraid to digress from the story of my own characters once in a while. It's very dated, of course. But I think it's still funny. ^_^

6:02 pm - Romulan Hair

lostboydv
Several years ago, when Star Trek: The Next Generation was in its final season on TV, I was in the U.S.S. Alacrity chapter of the Starfleet international fan association. I was a huge Trek geek, yep. And since I had art talent, I joined the Engineering division of the club, which was responsible for the chapter's newsletter, among other things. I contributed artwork for the covers of the newsletter sometimes. And once, the Assistant Chief Engineer asked me to draw a comic strip that he'd thought up the idea for. He just wanted me to put it down in black and white, since he didn't have cartoon-style art skills and I did.

This was the result.Collapse )
